Responsive Web Design (RWD) is an approach in which a single layout adapts fluidly to any screen size rather than building separate sites for desktop and mobile. Ethan Marcotte introduced the term in a landmark 2010 A List Apart article, and it has since become the default way the web is built. Its three pillars are fluid grids (sizing in relative units), flexible media (images and video that scale to their container), and CSS media queries (rules that respond to viewport characteristics); modern CSS adds container queries so individual components can respond to the space they occupy rather than just the whole viewport. RWD reduces maintenance to one codebase instead of separate desktop and mobile sites, improves the experience across the full device spectrum, and supports search visibility through mobile-first indexing. The alternative, maintaining parallel sites, multiplies cost and almost always leaves one version stale.

  1. Set the viewport meta tag so mobile browsers render at device width.
