Data Contracts

Data contracts are version-controlled agreements that pin a dataset's schema, semantics, and SLAs between producers and consumers. Enforced in CI and at runtime, they stop silent breaking changes and rebuild trust in data.

Best Practice: Data Contracts

A data contract is an explicit, version-controlled agreement between a data producer and its consumers. It specifies the schema, field semantics, allowed values, quality guarantees, and service levels for a dataset or event stream. Contracts shift data integration from implicit, fragile coupling to a clear interface, much like an API contract. They matter because silent producer changes are a leading cause of broken pipelines and lost trust in data. A useful mental model is that a data contract is to a dataset what an API specification is to a service: it lets each side change independently as long as the published interface holds. Contracts are most valuable at organizational seams, where the producing team and consuming team report to different managers and informal coordination breaks down. They also create a clear place to attach ownership, SLAs, and on-call responsibility for data.

Step-by-Step Implementation Guidance

  1. Identify the high-value interfaces where breakages hurt most.
  2. Write the contract as code: schema, types, constraints, ownership, and SLAs.
  3. Store contracts in version control next to the producing code so changes are reviewed.
  4. Enforce the contract in CI so a non-compliant change fails before release.
  5. Validate real data against the contract at runtime and alert on violations.
  6. Version contracts and define a deprecation policy for breaking changes.
  7. Publish contracts to a catalog so consumers can discover and depend on them.

Common Mistakes Teams Make When Ignoring This Practice

  • Letting producers change schemas without notifying consumers.
  • Documenting expectations in wikis that drift from reality.
  • Enforcing contracts only in production, after damage is done.
  • Skipping versioning, so any change is potentially breaking.
  • Writing contracts no consumer actually relies on.
  • Treating the contract as the producer's wish list rather than a negotiated, consumer-driven agreement.

Tools and Techniques That Support This Practice

  • dbt model contracts and constraints.
  • Schema registries such as Confluent Schema Registry for events.
  • Open standards like the Open Data Contract Standard (Bitol, Linux Foundation).
  • Validation tools such as Great Expectations and Soda for runtime checks.
  • Contract testing frameworks and CI checks that compare proposed schema changes against the registered contract.

How This Practice Applies to Different Migration Types

  • Cloud Migration: Use contracts to keep consumers stable while the producer moves platforms.
  • Database Migration: Pin the consumer-facing schema with a contract even as internal tables change.
  • SaaS Migration: Treat vendor exports as contracts and test imports against them.
  • Codebase Migration: Enforce contracts in CI so refactored producers cannot ship breaking changes.
  • Phased migration: A contract lets you swap the implementation behind a dataset while keeping the consumer-facing interface stable, so cutover risk drops.

Checklist

  • High-value data interfaces identified
  • Contracts defined as code with schema, semantics, and SLAs
  • Contracts stored in version control and reviewed
  • Compliance enforced in CI
  • Runtime validation and alerting in place
  • Versioning and deprecation policy defined
  • Contracts published to a catalog for discovery
