API Rate Limiting

Rate limiting caps client request rates to protect capacity, ensure fairness, and stop abuse. Algorithms like token bucket plus standard 429 responses and RateLimit headers let clients back off gracefully.

Best Practice: API Rate Limiting

Rate limiting caps how many requests a client may make within a time window. It protects backend capacity, enforces fair use across tenants, and blunts abuse and denial-of-service attempts. Common algorithms include fixed window, sliding window, token bucket, and leaky bucket; token bucket is popular because it allows short bursts while bounding the long-run rate. The IETF has standardized RateLimit response headers so servers can communicate limits and remaining quota to clients. Rate limiting matters because a single misbehaving or malicious client can otherwise degrade service for everyone.

Step-by-Step Implementation Guidance

  1. Decide the limit dimension: per API key, per user, per IP, or per tenant.
  2. Choose an algorithm; token bucket balances burst tolerance with steady throughput.
  3. Set tiered limits that match plans and protect the slowest backend resource.
  4. Return HTTP 429 Too Many Requests when a client exceeds its quota.
  5. Send RateLimit and Retry-After headers so clients can back off gracefully.
  6. Implement limits at the gateway or a shared store (Redis) so they hold across instances.
  7. Monitor rejection rates and tune limits; alert on sustained throttling that signals abuse or undersizing.

Common Mistakes Teams Make When Ignoring This Practice

  • No limits at all, leaving the API open to accidental or malicious overload.
  • Per-instance limits that a load balancer easily bypasses.
  • Returning a generic 500 instead of 429 with retry guidance.
  • Omitting RateLimit headers, forcing clients to guess and retry blindly.
  • One global limit that punishes well-behaved tenants for a noisy neighbor.

Tools and Techniques That Support This Practice

  • API gateways such as Kong, Apigee, AWS API Gateway, and Envoy.
  • Redis with token-bucket scripts for distributed counters.
  • Cloud WAFs and Cloudflare for edge-level throttling.
  • Client SDKs that honor Retry-After with exponential backoff.

How This Practice Applies to Different Migration Types

  • Cloud Migration: Gateway-level limits protect newly elastic but still finite backends from runaway costs.
  • Database Migration: Throttling shields a fragile database during cutover from request storms.
  • SaaS Migration: Consuming a SaaS API means respecting its limits; build backoff into integration code.
  • Codebase Migration: Adding limits while refactoring endpoints prevents load tests from overwhelming new services.

Checklist

  • Limit dimension chosen (key, user, IP, tenant).
  • Algorithm selected and tuned for expected bursts.
  • HTTP 429 returned on exceedance.
  • RateLimit and Retry-After headers sent.
  • Limits enforced in a shared store across instances.
  • Tiered limits aligned to plans.
  • Throttling metrics monitored and alerted.
