API-First Design

API-first design makes the API contract a product, agreed before implementation. It enables parallel development, enforces consistency, and prevents the costly rework of changing an interface consumers already depend on.

Best Practice: API-First Design

API-first design treats the API as a first-class product, with its contract defined and reviewed before any implementation begins. Instead of letting an interface emerge from code, teams write a machine-readable contract (typically OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, or protobuf), agree on it with consumers, then build the server and clients in parallel against it. This matters because the interface is the hardest part to change once consumers depend on it. Designing it deliberately reduces rework, enables parallel development, and produces consistent, predictable APIs across an organization.

Step-by-Step Implementation Guidance

  1. Identify consumers and use cases first; design the contract around their needs, not internal data models.
  2. Write the contract in a standard format and review it with stakeholders before coding.
  3. Establish org-wide style guidelines (naming, versioning, errors, pagination) and enforce them with linters.
  4. Generate mock servers from the contract so client teams can start immediately.
  5. Build server and clients in parallel, both validating against the agreed contract.
  6. Run contract tests in CI to ensure the implementation never diverges from the spec.
  7. Govern changes through a review process that flags breaking changes early.

Common Mistakes Teams Make When Ignoring This Practice

  • Letting the database schema dictate the public API shape.
  • Designing each endpoint ad hoc, producing inconsistent conventions across teams.
  • Skipping consumer review, then discovering the contract is unusable after launch.
  • Treating the spec as throwaway documentation rather than the source of truth.
  • Building server and client sequentially, serializing work that could run in parallel.

Tools and Techniques That Support This Practice

  • OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, and Protocol Buffers as contract formats.
  • Stoplight and SwaggerHub for collaborative design and governance.
  • Spectral for style-rule linting.
  • Prism for mocking; Pact and Schemathesis for contract testing.

How This Practice Applies to Different Migration Types

  • Cloud Migration: A stable contract lets you re-host services without changing how consumers integrate.
  • Database Migration: The contract decouples the public interface from storage, so schema changes stay invisible.
  • SaaS Migration: Designing an anti-corruption contract first shields your system from vendor-specific quirks.
  • Codebase Migration: The frozen contract becomes the acceptance test for a rewritten implementation.

Checklist

  • Consumers and use cases identified before design.
  • Contract written in a standard format and reviewed.
  • Org-wide style guidelines enforced by linting.
  • Mock servers generated for parallel work.
  • Server and clients built against the same contract.
  • Contract tests run in CI.
  • Change governance flags breaking changes.
