OWASP Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS)

MASVS provides a mobile-specific security baseline for storage, cryptography, authentication, and network handling on iOS and Android. It helps teams defend apps that run on untrusted devices where attackers can inspect and tamper with the binary.

Best Practice: OWASP Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS)

The OWASP Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS) defines security requirements specific to mobile applications on iOS and Android. It groups controls into areas such as data storage, cryptography, authentication, network communication, platform interaction, code quality, and resilience against reverse engineering. It matters because mobile apps run on devices outside the organization's control, where attackers can inspect storage, intercept traffic, and tamper with the binary. MASVS gives mobile teams a clear, testable baseline tailored to those risks. For a mobile developer it clarifies which platform features to rely on; for a product owner it sets a defensible bar for app store and enterprise distribution. The trade-off is that resilience controls (anti-tampering) raise effort and should match the value of the data the app protects. The standard pairs with a profile concept so teams can choose which control groups apply: a simple utility app needs basic storage and network controls, while a banking app also needs strong resilience against reverse engineering and tampering. This profiling keeps the effort proportional to the threat the app actually faces.

Step-by-Step Implementation Guidance

  1. Decide which MASVS control groups apply and set a verification target.
  2. Ensure sensitive data is stored using platform-provided secure storage, not plain files.
  3. Use vetted cryptographic libraries and platform key stores rather than custom crypto.
  4. Enforce TLS with certificate validation for all network communication.
  5. Implement secure authentication and session handling, including biometric flows where used.
  6. Apply platform hardening, such as limiting exported components and validating inputs across app boundaries.
  7. Test the app against MASVS using the companion Mobile Application Security Testing Guide (MASTG).

Common Mistakes Teams Make When Ignoring This Practice

  • Storing tokens or personal data in plaintext on the device.
  • Rolling custom cryptography instead of using platform key stores.
  • Disabling certificate validation to make debugging easier and shipping it.
  • Trusting client-side checks that an attacker can bypass on a rooted device.
  • Leaving debug logging or test endpoints in production builds.
  • Assuming app store review or device sandboxing alone protects sensitive on-device data.

Tools and Techniques That Support This Practice

  • OWASP MASTG as the testing companion to MASVS.
  • MobSF (Mobile Security Framework) for static and dynamic analysis.
  • Frida and Objection for runtime inspection and tampering tests.
  • Platform key stores (Android Keystore, iOS Keychain) for secure secrets.
  • Network proxies to verify TLS and certificate pinning behavior.
  • Certificate pinning libraries and runtime application self-protection (RASP) for high-value apps.

How This Practice Applies to Different Migration Types

  • Cloud Migration: Re-verify network and authentication controls when mobile backends move to new endpoints.
  • Database Migration: Confirm on-device caches and synced data still use secure storage after backend data changes.
  • SaaS Migration: Assess a mobile SDK vendor against MASVS storage and network requirements before embedding it.
  • Codebase Migration: Re-test storage, cryptography, and platform controls when porting between native and cross-platform frameworks.

Checklist

  • Selected applicable MASVS control groups and a target
  • Stored sensitive data in platform secure storage
  • Used vetted cryptography and platform key stores
  • Enforced TLS with certificate validation
  • Implemented secure authentication and session handling
  • Hardened platform interactions and exported components
  • Tested against MASVS using the MASTG
