Micro-Frontends

Micro-frontends decompose a web app into independently built and deployed pieces owned by separate teams, composed into one experience. They unlock team autonomy at scale in exchange for runtime overhead and consistency risk.

Best Practice: Micro-Frontends

Micro-frontends extend the microservices idea to the browser. A large web application is decomposed into smaller, semi-independent frontends, each owned end to end by a different team and deployable on its own. The pieces are then composed at build time, run time, or via the server into a single user experience. The pattern was described by Cam Jackson on Martin Fowler's site in 2019. It suits large organizations where many teams must ship to one product without blocking each other, trading some runtime overhead and consistency risk for team autonomy.

Step-by-Step Implementation Guidance

  1. Confirm the organizational need: multiple teams contending over one frontend.
  2. Split the app along business domains, not technical layers.
  3. Choose a composition strategy: build-time packages, run-time module federation, iframes, or server-side composition.
  4. Define a shared contract for routing, authentication, and cross-app events.
  5. Establish a shared design system to preserve visual consistency.
  6. Give each micro-frontend its own pipeline and independent deploys.
  7. Monitor bundle duplication and overall performance.

Common Mistakes Teams Make When Ignoring This Practice

  • Adopting micro-frontends for a small app that a single team owns.
  • Splitting by technical layer instead of business domain.
  • Duplicating large dependencies across fragments, bloating payloads.
  • No shared design system, leading to an inconsistent UI.
  • Tight runtime coupling that defeats independent deployment.

Tools and Techniques That Support This Practice

  • Webpack Module Federation and native ES modules.
  • single-spa for orchestrating multiple frameworks.
  • Import maps and a shared design system.
  • Contract tests for cross-app integration.

How This Practice Applies to Different Migration Types

  • Cloud Migration: Deploy fragments independently to different services or regions.
  • Database Migration: Each micro-frontend pairs with its own backend, isolating data changes.
  • SaaS Migration: Wrap a legacy UI as one fragment while building replacements alongside it.
  • Codebase Migration: Strangle a monolithic frontend one fragment at a time without a big-bang rewrite.

Checklist

  • Organizational need validated.
  • Split by business domain.
  • Composition strategy chosen.
  • Shared routing and auth contract defined.
  • Shared design system in place.
  • Independent pipelines per fragment.
  • Bundle duplication monitored.
