Active-Passive DR to Active-Active Resilience Blueprint

Turn an idle, rarely tested active-passive DR site into a live active-active peer. The crux is replacing single-primary replication with a multi-region-capable data topology, then health-based routing, circuit breakers, and continuous chaos testing to prove resilience.

What and Why

This blueprint converts an active-passive disaster-recovery posture into active-active. In active-passive, a standby site sits mostly idle and only takes over during failover, an untested path that often fails when needed and wastes the standby's capacity. Active-active runs both sites live, uses all capacity, and turns failover into a routine traffic shift rather than a risky event.

Phases

Assessment. Audit the current DR setup: replication lag, last successful failover test, RTO/RPO targets, and which components are warm versus cold. Identify the single-primary databases that block active-active.

Data topology. The core challenge. Replace single-primary replication with a topology that supports writes at both sites: a multi-primary or globally distributed database (CockroachDB, Spanner, DynamoDB global tables), or region-partitioned data so each site owns a shard. Use event streaming for asynchronous propagation where eventual consistency is acceptable.

Traffic management. Put both sites behind global load balancing with health-based routing. Add circuit breakers so a degraded site sheds load gracefully. Adopt cell-based architecture to bound failure blast radius.

Site activation. Promote the passive site to live: scale it to real load, route a growing share of traffic to it, and validate it handles production independently.

Chaos validation. Continuously kill a site in production-like tests to prove the other absorbs traffic within RTO/RPO and that no split-brain occurs.

Key Risks and Mitigations

  • Split-brain from concurrent writes. Adopt a database built for multi-region writes; never make a single-primary database active-active.
  • Cost of running both sites hot. Offset by using the formerly idle capacity for real traffic and right-sizing.
  • Operational complexity. Use cell-based architecture, automation, and clear ownership per site.
  • Untested assumptions. Replace annual DR drills with continuous chaos testing.

Recommended Tooling

A multi-region-capable database, global load balancing with health checks, Kafka for replication and events, Terraform for symmetric sites, and Prometheus plus chaos tooling for resilience validation.

Success Metrics

Track availability (including survived site loss), achieved RTO and RPO, and resource utilization now that the standby carries live traffic.

Prerequisites

Defined RTO/RPO and SLOs, a data layer that supports multi-site writes, symmetric infrastructure as code, and chaos testing capability.
