Docker Swarm to Amazon ECS Blueprint

What and Why

This blueprint migrates services from Docker Swarm to Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS), preferably on Fargate so there are no container hosts to manage. Swarm is in maintenance mode with a shrinking ecosystem; ECS provides a managed orchestrator integrated with AWS networking, IAM, load balancing, and logging. The work centers on translating Swarm stack files into ECS task definitions and services.

Phases

Assessment. Inventory Swarm stacks: services, replicas, published ports, overlay networks, secrets, configs, and volumes. Note placement constraints and any Swarm-specific features (routing mesh, rolling-update settings).

ECS foundation. Provision with Terraform: a VPC, an ECS cluster (Fargate capacity), an Application Load Balancer, ECR for images, IAM task roles, Secrets Manager, and CloudWatch logging.

Task translation. Convert each Swarm service into an ECS task definition (containers, CPU/memory, env, secrets) and an ECS service (desired count, ALB target group, health checks). Swarm secrets and configs map to Secrets Manager and SSM Parameter Store; overlay networks map to ECS service discovery (Cloud Map) and security groups.

Migration. Push images to ECR, deploy ECS services into a staging environment, and validate networking, service discovery, and load balancing.

Cutover. Shift traffic via DNS or ALB weighting (blue-green using CodeDeploy), verify, then tear down the Swarm cluster.

Key Risks and Mitigations

  • Networking model differences (overlay vs. VPC, routing mesh vs. ALB). Test service-to-service discovery and ingress early.
  • Secrets and config translation. Map Swarm secrets/configs explicitly to Secrets Manager and Parameter Store.
  • Config drift during manual translation. Generate task definitions from Compose with a converter, then refine.
  • Skills gap on ECS concepts. Start with Fargate to avoid host management.

Recommended Tooling

Terraform for the ECS foundation, ECR for images, the ECS CLI or a Compose-to-ECS converter, AWS CodeDeploy for blue-green, and an observability stack such as Datadog plus CloudWatch.

Success Metrics

Track reduced operational overhead (no Swarm hosts to patch), availability through cutover, deployment frequency, and cost reduction with Fargate right-sizing.

Prerequisites

Container images in a registry, an AWS account and VPC, Terraform skills, and an inventory of Swarm stacks with their networking and secrets.
