EJB to REST Services Blueprint

Re-expose remote EJB business logic as HTTP REST services defined contract-first in OpenAPI, freeing clients from RMI and Java lock-in. REST and EJB run in parallel while clients migrate one at a time before the remote interfaces retire.

What and Why

Remote Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) expose business logic over RMI/IIOP, a Java-specific binary remoting protocol that binds clients to Java, a particular application server, and tight network coupling. This blueprint re-exposes that logic as HTTP REST services so any client in any language can integrate, and so the logic can be deployed outside a heavyweight EJB container. REST (representational state transfer) models functionality as resources accessed with standard HTTP verbs, which is the lingua franca of modern integration.

Phases

Assessment. Inventory remote and local session beans, their business interfaces, transaction demarcation, and the clients that call them. Distinguish stateless session beans, which map straightforwardly onto stateless HTTP, from stateful session beans, which hold conversational state and need a deliberate session strategy because HTTP is stateless by design.

Contract design. Apply API-first design, defining each service's REST contract in OpenAPI before implementation. Model EJB methods as resources and operations, aiming for level 2 of the Richardson maturity model, which means using proper HTTP verbs and status codes rather than tunneling everything through POST. Map the checked exceptions EJBs throw to standardized problem-detail error responses.

Service implementation. Wrap the existing business logic in Spring Boot or Quarkus REST controllers, reusing the session-bean code where it is cleanly separated from container concerns. Replace container-managed transactions with @Transactional methods and keep the same database access via JDBC, so no data migration is required.

Client migration. Generate HTTP client SDKs from the OpenAPI specification and update callers to use them instead of EJB stubs. Migrate one client at a time so each integration is verified independently.

Cutover. Run the REST and EJB endpoints in parallel using the strangler fig pattern, shift clients across as they are migrated, then retire the EJB remote interfaces once the last client is off them.

Key Risks and Mitigations

  • Behavioral changes: RMI is synchronous and participates in distributed transactions in ways plain HTTP does not. Make operations idempotent so retries are safe, and define clear, documented error semantics in the REST contract.
  • Downtime: Run both interfaces in parallel and migrate clients incrementally rather than cutting them all over at once, keeping rollback cheap.
  • Skills gap: Teams used to EJB remoting must learn REST design and stateless thinking, particularly for former stateful beans whose conversational state now needs an explicit home.

Recommended Tooling

Spring Boot or Quarkus for the REST runtimes, OpenAPI for the contracts and client-SDK generation, and JDBC against the existing database so the data layer is untouched.

Success Metrics

Track integration cost for onboarding new clients, which drops sharply with language-agnostic REST, lead time for service changes, and deployment frequency once the services run free of the EJB container.

Prerequisites

Source for the session beans, a complete list of EJB clients and their constraints, a test suite for the business logic, and OpenAPI tooling for contract-first development.

Sequencing and Rollback

Sequence by exposing stateless session beans as REST first, since they map cleanly onto stateless HTTP, and tackle stateful beans last because they need an explicit session strategy. Run REST and EJB interfaces in parallel so rollback for any client is reverting it to the EJB stub. Because the database is shared and unchanged, no client migration risks data; each is independently reversible. Migrate one client at a time and confirm parity against the EJB path before retiring that client's old integration. Confirm an OpenAPI-driven contract-test step is wired into CI so the generated client SDKs and the server implementation cannot drift apart, preserving the integration guarantees that the strongly-typed EJB stubs previously provided for free.
