What and Why

jQuery encourages imperative DOM manipulation with state scattered across markup, which becomes unmaintainable as features grow. React introduces a declarative component model with predictable one-way data flow and a rich ecosystem. This blueprint replaces a jQuery-driven frontend with a React SPA incrementally, mounting React into existing pages before consolidating into a full single-page app.

Phases

Assessment. Map jQuery event handlers, $.ajax calls, plugins (validation, modals, grids), and where state lives in the DOM. Identify pages/widgets by churn and complexity to sequence migration.

Tooling setup. Add Vite, React, TypeScript, and linting. Mount React into specific DOM nodes (createRoot) so React and jQuery coexist on the same pages. Establish a component library aligned to the design system.

Island migration. Convert high-value widgets to React components, replacing jQuery plugins with React/headless equivalents and $.ajax with fetch/Axios in React Query. Scope React mounts to avoid clashing with jQuery on shared DOM.

SPA consolidation. Introduce React Router and lift islands into a cohesive SPA shell with shared layout, auth, and state. Move server interactions to a typed API client. Remove DOM-as-state patterns.

Cutover. Once routing and all interactive regions are React, remove jQuery and its plugins, delete legacy scripts, and ship a single React SPA with code-splitting.

  • Regression from removed plugins: Replace one plugin at a time with end-to-end and visual tests guarding behavior.
  • Double-binding: During coexistence, ensure only one framework controls a given element.
  • Skills gap: React's mental model differs from jQuery; pair and train.

Recommended Tooling

React, Vite, TypeScript, React Router, React Query, a design-system component library, Vitest, and Playwright. Use feature flags to gate migrated regions.

Success Metrics

Smaller bundle after removing jQuery/plugins, faster feature lead time, improved interaction performance, and higher automated UI test coverage.

Prerequisites

A widget/page inventory, a Node.js build pipeline, baseline end-to-end tests, and a sequencing plan from islands to a unified SPA.
