jQuery to Vue Blueprint

Replace imperative jQuery code with declarative Vue 3 components adopted as progressively enhanced islands. Introduce Vite, TypeScript, and Pinia, then remove jQuery and its plugins at cutover.

What and Why

jQuery solved cross-browser DOM access in an era of inconsistent APIs, but it leads to imperative, hard-to-test spaghetti where state lives in the DOM. Vue 3 offers a declarative, reactive component model with a small runtime and an approachable single-file-component format, making it a natural target for teams modernizing jQuery-era code. Vue can be adopted as progressively enhanced islands, so a big-bang rewrite is unnecessary.

Phases

Assessment. Map jQuery usage: event handlers, AJAX ($.ajax), plugins (datepickers, carousels, validation), and DOM mutations. Identify where state is implicitly stored in markup. Note jQuery plugins that need Vue-native replacements.

Tooling setup. Add Vite and Vue 3 alongside the existing page. Mount Vue to specific root elements (createApp(...).mount('#widget')) so jQuery and Vue coexist. Introduce TypeScript and ESLint.

Island migration. Convert the highest-churn widgets first into Vue single-file components. Replace $.ajax with fetch or Axios inside composables. Swap jQuery plugins for Vue equivalents or headless libraries. Keep the rest of the page on jQuery until reached.

State consolidation. As multiple islands need shared state, introduce Pinia. Remove DOM-as-state patterns. Standardize API access in a typed client.

Cutover. Once all interactive regions are Vue, remove jQuery and its plugins, delete legacy event wiring, and ship a single Vue application or a set of fully migrated islands.

Key Risks and Mitigations

  • Regression from removed plugins: Replace one plugin at a time and verify with visual and end-to-end tests.
  • Double event binding: During coexistence, ensure jQuery and Vue do not both handle the same elements; scope Vue mounts tightly.
  • Skills gap: Vue reactivity differs from imperative jQuery; invest early in the composition API.

Recommended Tooling

Vue 3, Vite, TypeScript, Pinia for shared state, Vitest for unit tests, and Playwright for end-to-end coverage. Use Vue DevTools to inspect reactivity during the transition.

Success Metrics

Smaller bundle after dropping jQuery and plugins, faster feature lead time, improved interaction performance, and higher automated test coverage of UI behavior.

Prerequisites

A component inventory, a Node.js build pipeline, and baseline end-to-end tests to catch regressions as islands replace jQuery widgets.
