What and Why

This blueprint relocates on-premises workloads to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Teams pick GCP for its data and analytics gravity (BigQuery), strong Kubernetes lineage (GKE), and per-second billing. The plan rehosts to meet exit deadlines, then optimizes toward managed services.

Phases

Assessment. Use Google Cloud Migration Center to discover assets, map dependencies, and generate total-cost-of-ownership and right-sizing reports. Assign each application a 7 Rs disposition and group into waves.

Landing zone. Deploy the Google Cloud landing zone blueprint: a resource hierarchy with folders and projects, Shared VPC, Cloud Interconnect or HA VPN to on-prem, Organization Policy constraints, centralized Cloud Logging, and Cloud Identity. Provision with the Terraform Cloud Foundation Toolkit.

Migration waves. Use Migrate to Virtual Machines (M2VM) for agentless replication and rehosting of VMs into Compute Engine. Move databases to Cloud SQL or AlloyDB with Database Migration Service. Validate each wave in a sandbox project before cutover.

Optimization. Adopt committed-use discounts, right-size instances with recommendations, move object data to Cloud Storage, and refactor priority apps toward GKE Autopilot and Cloud Run.

Decommission. Confirm backups, run a soak period, then power down on-prem hardware.

Key Risks and Mitigations

  • Dependency gaps found late. Rely on Migration Center dependency maps and keep coupled apps in one wave.
  • Transfer bottlenecks. Use Transfer Appliance for bulk seeding and Interconnect for ongoing sync.
  • Budget drift. Enforce labels, budgets and alerts, and committed-use discounts.
  • Skills gap. Provide enablement and a landing-zone operations runbook.

Recommended Tooling

Migration Center and Migrate to Virtual Machines, Database Migration Service, the Cloud Foundation Toolkit for Terraform, Cloud Monitoring and Logging, and Backup and DR Service.

Success Metrics

Track realized cost reduction, VMs migrated per wave, application availability through cutover, and mean time to recovery.

Prerequisites

A Google Cloud organization and landing zone, Interconnect or HA VPN connectivity, a Migration Center assessment, and an approved wave schedule with rollback gates.
