What and Why

SAP ECC (ERP Central Component) mainstream maintenance ends in 2027 (with extended options to 2030), pushing enterprises to SAP S/4HANA. S/4HANA runs on the in-memory HANA database, simplifies the data model (e.g., Universal Journal, removal of aggregate/index tables), and supports Fiori UX and cloud deployment. Migration is a major business-transformation program, not a technical upgrade alone.

Phases

Assessment. Run SAP Readiness Check and a custom-code analysis (ATC with S/4HANA checks). Inventory custom ABAP, modifications, interfaces, and add-ons. Assess data quality and master-data hygiene.

Approach selection. Choose brownfield (system conversion of the existing ECC), greenfield (new implementation with reimagined processes), or selective data transition (hybrid). Brownfield preserves history with less reengineering; greenfield enables clean-core and best-practice processes.

Data migration. For brownfield, perform the database migration to HANA and the S/4 conversion (SUM/DMO), including the simplified data model conversion. For greenfield, use the SAP Migration Cockpit to load master and transactional data. Cleanse master data first.

Custom code remediation. Adapt custom ABAP for S/4HANA simplifications, deprecated tables, and the new data model. Adopt clean-core: move custom logic to extensions and side-by-side apps (BTP) instead of core modifications.

Go-live. Execute mock conversions and multiple test cycles, train users on Fiori, and cut over with a tightly managed downtime window. Stabilize and optimize post-go-live.

Key Risks and Mitigations

  • Business disruption: Run multiple full dress rehearsals; plan downtime and contingency.
  • Custom code breakage: Remediate against ATC findings early; embrace clean-core to limit future debt.
  • Data quality: Cleanse master data before migration; reconcile financial balances.
  • Skills gap: Engage SAP-certified partners and train internal teams on HANA/Fiori/BTP.

Recommended Tooling

SAP Readiness Check, ABAP Test Cockpit, Software Update Manager (SUM/DMO), SAP Migration Cockpit, Fiori, and SAP BTP for side-by-side extensions. Use SAP Activate methodology.

Success Metrics

Real-time reporting via the Universal Journal, reduced data footprint and TCO, improved process efficiency, and a maintainable clean-core landscape.

Prerequisites

Executive sponsorship, a certified SAP partner, master-data governance, and a multi-quarter test plan. Treat this as enterprise transformation with strong change management.
