Modular Monolith

A modular monolith deploys as one unit but enforces strict internal module boundaries, balancing operational simplicity with clean separation.

A modular monolith is an application deployed as a single unit whose internal structure is divided into independent modules with clear, enforced boundaries. It aims to capture the operational simplicity of a monolith while gaining much of the maintainability that drives teams toward microservices.

How It Works

The codebase is partitioned into modules, each owning its own domain logic and data. Modules communicate only through well-defined public interfaces, never by reaching directly into another module's internals or tables. Build tooling, package boundaries, or architecture tests enforce these rules so that accidental coupling fails the build. Everything still compiles into one artifact and runs in one process, so calls between modules stay in-process and transactions remain straightforward.

Why It Matters

Many teams adopt microservices to get clean boundaries, then inherit the network failures, distributed transactions, and deployment overhead that come with them. A modular monolith offers an alternative: enforce the boundaries first, in code, without paying the distributed-systems tax. If a module later genuinely needs independent scaling or deployment, its clean interface makes extracting it into a separate service far less painful.

The risk is discipline. Without automated enforcement, module boundaries erode into a tangled "big ball of mud." The architecture only delivers value if the boundaries are real and continuously verified.

Related Terms

A monolith lacks enforced internal boundaries. Microservices take the boundaries to separate deployments. Bounded context and domain-driven design guide where the module lines should fall.
