Find Architectural Hubs with vg hubs

Use vg hubs to surface the most-depended-on nodes in your codebase — the functions, classes, and modules that everything else relies on. Learn why hubs matter for risk, refactoring, and onboarding.

Every codebase has a small number of nodes that everything else leans on. In Vibgrate Graph these are called hubs — the most-depended-on code nodes in your code map. This article shows you how to find them with vg hubs and why they matter for risk and refactoring decisions. It is written for both developers exploring an unfamiliar repository and technical leaders assessing architectural risk.

Overview

Vibgrate Graph builds a structural map of your source code — nodes (functions, classes, modules) and the edges between them (calls, imports). A hub is a node with a high number of inbound dependencies: many other nodes reach it. Hubs are where a single change has the widest reach, so they are the natural focus for testing, review, and stabilization.

Prerequisites

You need a code map. If you have not built one yet, run a scan or build first so the graph artifact exists:

vg build

Check that the graph is fresh before querying it:

vg status

Find your hubs

List the most-depended-on nodes:

vg hubs

The output ranks nodes by how many other nodes depend on them. The top entries are your architectural load-bearing walls: shared utilities, core domain types, central service clients, and configuration entry points. A node near the top of this list is one you should be cautious about changing.

How to read the results

  • Top hubs are high-leverage. A bug here propagates widely; a well-placed improvement pays off everywhere.
  • Unexpected hubs are signals. If a file you thought was peripheral ranks high, you have discovered hidden coupling worth examining.
  • Hubs guide onboarding. New team members should read the top hubs first — they explain how the system is wired.

Acting on hubs

Once you know a hub, deepen your understanding of it with the single-node view and its blast radius:

vg impact

vg show explains what a node is, what it calls, and what calls it. vg impact estimates what would break if you changed it. Together with vg hubs they form a tight loop for assessing and de-risking your most critical code.
