Multi-Region Active-Active Web Platform

A multi-cloud active-active web platform that serves global users from multiple live regions with global routing, a geo-distributed CockroachDB, and cross-region event replication. It offers the highest availability at the highest operational cost.

Overview

This architecture serves a web application from two or more regions simultaneously, with every region able to handle every request. Use it when you need very high availability, low latency for a global user base, or resilience against the loss of an entire region or cloud. Active-active means there is no idle standby; all regions take live traffic, which also validates failover continuously.

The design spans more than one cloud to avoid single-provider risk, tied together by global routing and a globally distributed database.

Components

  • Global load balancer: DNS or anycast routing that directs each user to the nearest healthy region.
  • CDN: Caches static assets and absorbs traffic at the edge.
  • Kubernetes: Runs the stateless application tier identically in each region.
  • CockroachDB: Geo-distributed SQL database with synchronous replication and survivability across regions.
  • Kafka: Cross-region event replication for asynchronous state propagation.
  • Redis: Regional cache for hot data and sessions.
  • Terraform: Provisions identical infrastructure in every region.

Data Flow

A user request resolves through the global load balancer to the closest region. The CDN serves cached assets; dynamic requests reach the regional Kubernetes app tier. Reads hit the regional Redis cache or the local CockroachDB replica. Writes go to CockroachDB, which replicates across regions using its consensus protocol so all regions converge on the same committed state. Domain events flow through Kafka with cross-region mirroring to keep derived data consistent. If a region degrades, health checks pull it from rotation and users shift to a healthy region.

Scaling and Resilience

Each region scales independently with Horizontal Pod Autoscaling and regional node autoscaling. CockroachDB tolerates the loss of a region while preserving consistency, at the cost of higher write latency for globally replicated ranges; partition data by locality to keep most writes local. Continuous active-active traffic means failover is exercised constantly rather than discovered during an incident. The CDN and edge caches shield origins during traffic spikes.

Security

All inter-region traffic is encrypted in transit, and the database uses certificate-based node authentication. Identity and access are federated across clouds with least-privilege roles. WAF rules at the edge filter malicious traffic before it reaches origins. Secrets are managed centrally and replicated securely. Follow both the AWS and Azure Well-Architected frameworks to keep parity across providers.

Trade-offs and Alternatives

Active-active is the gold standard for availability but the hardest and most expensive to operate: you pay for full capacity in every region and must handle data conflicts and cross-region write latency. Multi-cloud doubles the operational learning curve. A simpler active-passive or warm-standby design meets most recovery objectives at far lower cost and complexity. Single-region with multi-AZ is sufficient for many applications. Choose active-active multi-cloud only when downtime or provider lock-in carries existential risk.
