Micro-Frontends Platform

Micro-frontends split a large web application into independently developed and deployed pieces, each owned by a team and composed into one experience at runtime. The pattern extends microservice autonomy to the browser. Choose it when many teams must ship to the same product without blocking each other, and the app is large enough that a single front-end codebase has become a bottleneck. It is overkill for small apps.

Components

  • Shell app (host): the container that handles routing, layout, authentication, and loads remote modules.
  • Module federation: the runtime mechanism (Webpack Module Federation or native ES modules with an import map) that loads remotely deployed bundles.
  • CDN: serves each team's versioned bundles globally.
  • API gateway: fronts the per-team backends, often as backends-for-frontends.
  • Azure Static Web Apps: hosts each micro-frontend with its own CI/CD pipeline.
  • Design system: a shared component library and tokens that keep the composed UI consistent.

Data Flow

The shell loads at first paint and reads a manifest of remote modules with their current versions. As the user navigates, the shell dynamically imports the matching remote bundle from the CDN and mounts it. Each module calls its own backend through the API gateway. Shared state passes through a thin event bus or a shared store; cross-team contracts are versioned and documented.

Scaling and Resilience

The key scaling axis is organizational: teams deploy on independent pipelines without a global release train. Version pinning and a manifest let the shell roll forward or back per module. Wrap each remote in an error boundary so a failed module degrades gracefully instead of breaking the whole page. Serve bundles from a CDN for performance and to absorb load. Watch shared-dependency duplication, which inflates bundle size.

Security

The shell owns authentication and passes tokens to modules; modules must not mint their own credentials. Enforce a Content Security Policy that allows only trusted module origins. Verify bundle integrity with subresource integrity hashes. Gate the API gateway with OAuth 2.0 and scope tokens per backend. Treat every cross-module message as untrusted input.

Trade-offs and Alternatives

Micro-frontends add runtime complexity, shared-dependency management, and versioning overhead. A modular monolith front end with clear module boundaries delivers most of the team autonomy with far less operational cost for medium products. Reserve micro-frontends for large, multi-team platforms where independent deployment is the dominant requirement.
